First of all, going to the gym isn’t necessarily a fashion and beauty show, however: we all like to look good as well as feel good, and going to the gym is no exception. You’ll find no make up products here (although if you do wear make-up to the gym I don’t judge, you do you) but you will find the products I love that make my gym experience all the more relaxing and refreshing.
I love going to the gym, and the fact that mine is a 20-minute drive from my house really means that the whole visit if more of an experience than a quick in-and-out dash. I don’t want to it in the car on the way home feeling hot and sweaty so I do always take advantage of the facilities at my local gym to help me leave feeling fully rejuvinated in body and spirit. The last thing I want is to come home from a workout feeling gross, so I’ve listed the things that I feel really help save both my skin and my time.
A Refreshing Face Mist.
An essential if, like me, you do a couple of classes back-to-back or if you just want a quick refresher before heading home if you’re the showering-at-home type. I’m fairly new to the world of face mists, but I’m also fairly addicted and always carry one with me whenever I’m working out either at the gym or if I’m out on a bike ride.
My two favourites of the moment are Pixi Milky Moisturising Mist which I’ve talked about in a previous post and still adore, and Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Moisturising Mist which smells amazing and really rehydrates tired skin.
I’m obsessed with lip balms, both in and out of the gym. I have them everywhere: in my car, every handbag I own, bedside table, bathroom, kitchen drawer, coffee table… so clearly my gym bag is no exception. I find that I can’t concentrate well on what I’m doing if I’m conscious of my dry lips, so I always pack one and sometimes keep it with me during my workouts.
Moisturising Shower Gel.
I’ve been exploring the world of moisturising shower gels more seriously since coming home from Thailand in an effort to preserve my tan. The two that I’ve found to be most effective are Green People Neroli & Marshmallow – this smells so good – and Sanctuary Spa Air Whipped Souffle which is a beautiful consistency and leaves my skin feelingn soft and pampered for hours after use.
The gym is definitely a place where I feel I need a really good, luxurious shower gel to help unwind those aching muscles and cleanse all the sweat from my skin.
Hair Ties That Don’t Harm Your Hair.
I have about thirty hair ties in various locations around the house, and most of them are supposed to be kind to your hair. I’ve been colouring my hair since I was about sixteen, many moons ago, so anything that treats my hair nicely is something I’m on board with. I like my hair totally off my face when I work out, so any hairbands I use have to be ones that don’t break and damage my hair as much as regular ones.
I tend to wash my hair at the gym most days, but on the odd occasion that I either can’t be bothered or don’t have time then dry shampoo is the way forward. Dry shampoo has come a long way in recent years, and every gym fanatic I know carries a can or two with her at all times. I’m also guilty of only washing my hair when it needs it, and can get away with doing it only once or twice a week (thanks to years of highlights and bleach) so dry shampoo is definitely my friend.
I’m a fan of Aveda Shampure which smells amazing and always leaves my hair looking and feeling refreshed, and I’ve recently tried out R & Co Dry Shampoo Paste which has been a new experience but I really love the concept and it smells fantastic.
A Good Cleanser
Even if you’re just heading home, getting rid of the sweat build up from your face is something I always view as an essential before I leave the changing rooms. I hate feeling like I have a buildup on my skin, and since I have pretty sensitive combination skin it’s always a bit of a struggle to find something I can use fairly frequently without having breakouts (you’d think bad skin would be a thing of the past in your 30s, right?). But two that I’ve found to be super are Burts Bees Orange Essence Facial Cleanser and Kiehl’s Ultra Face Cleanser, both aren’t overscented and are light enough to not leave a film on my skin while still giving that deep cleanse.
